It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than it is for permission.

The UCONN Lady Huskies, unlike the game against Villanova, didn’t have permission from the opposition’s coach to kick the crap out of his team but that didn’t stop them from doing just that, from the beginning to end of this Big East Championship game. The final score was 75 to 36 and it could have even been worse. I say that simply because Renee Montgomery had one of her worse shooting performances of the year. Monty was an uncharacteristic 1 of 9 from the floor but, with Maya Moore again stepping up to show us why she is the best Women’s Basketball Player in the country, these upset minded Louisville birds were quickly reduced to little chicks. Maya, who was an amazing 10 of 13 from the floor and 6 of 9 from beyond the three point line, scored 28 points, in just 32 minutes. Also coming up big in this game was Tina Charles (She had a double, double and almost before halftime) who had 21 points to go with her game high 15 rebounds. Sure UCONN killed this club with their offense but, looking at the 12 measly points Louisville mustered for the entire 2nd half, as well as the 21.1% Field Goal percentage they had for the entire contest, you have to know that the defensive effort by UCONN must have been intense, as well as effective. Angel McCoughtry, Louisville’s star player was an ugly 3 of 16 from the floor and her 9 points she scored must have been a season low for her. Louisville Coach Jeff Walz was quoted after the game as saying “It’s 9:35 and the game was done by 7:20. ” Jeff, even though the game started a little later than the original 7 pm tip off time, you should get your watch checked. This one was over just 5 minutes into the game when UCONN was already leading by double digits. From there, things only got worse and the margin larger. Thank goodness for that because, unlike last year, when UCONN beat Louisville in the championship game, by only six, the lopsided result meant we didn’t have to listen to Coach Walz complain again about the advantage our Huskies have when playing for the trophy here in Hartford.
Now, as for the Big East Tournament and it being played in Hartford. This is the manger where Women’s Basketball was born and, for obvious financial reasons, this is where these games must be played. Last nights game, despite this lousy economy, was attended by 10,010 die hard fans. I haven’t seen the attendance figures for the entire tournament yet, I’m sure everyone in the Big East is satisfied with the numbers, as well s the cash. Sports is a business and if not for UCONN, the Big East, as well as Women’s Basketball, would still be a joke.
I’m out of here! Sic Rick
