340x.jpgWhen the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Team took a two point lead, against the #1 UCONN Huskies, early in the second half, (3:49 into the half) it was like an alarm clock went off. Seriously, someone pushed the right button and the result was a 22 to 1 run.  Once again, it was Renee Montgomery, with plenty of help from Maya Moore and Tina Charles, who turned back the opposition. The three scored 59 of UCONN’S 76 points and it was Montgomery’s back to back threes that no doubt lit the victory cigar. The final margin was only 10 ( 76 to 66) and  so my congrats go out to Muffet McGraw and her hard working ladies. From the start, they played UCONN tough,  and to the extent they became the first team this season to hold a second half lead against the nations #1 team.

No doubt, our girls got caught looking ahead to the NCAA tournament and why not. They’ve easily beaten their top competition and the only thing they still have to play for, in the regular season, is an undefeated record. (The Big East Title, is a done deal) Now, here is something I noticed about yesterday’s game and “Papa” Geno should do the same.  Maya Moore only shot one foul shot and despite playing 38 minutes. That’s ridiculous and as far as I’m concerned, it means she isn’t taking the ball to the hole enough. Come on Maya, you should be averaging 25 points a game and not struggling to surpass Nykesha Sales 20.9 average during the 1997-98 season.

The next two game are easy wins (Against Villanova and Seton Hall) and two steps closer to games that really matter. Kara Wolters went out on a limb yesterday when she said she thought UCONN would go undefeated. Are you kidding me! I told you that months ago and continued to say the same, even after we lost Caroline Doty. Tiffany Hayes continued to step up yesterday (10 points, 5 rebounds) yet, Kalina Greene was totally ineffective yesterday.. The battle of the boards went to UCONN (40 to 36) and again Montgomery’s distribution of the ball ((8 assists) was a thing of beauty.

I’m out of here!  Sic Rick
