maya.jpgIt’s getting harder and harder to write anything new about the UCONN Women’s Basketball Team and that’s because every game it’s the same old story. Easy wins, contributions from many and a defense that keeps the opposition from even thinking about an upset. The ladies didn’t play their best offense yesterday, when they beat a helpless and hapless Providence Friars  club by the lopsided score of 75-39.  The best part about what’s going on right now is that the starters are staying sharp but without having to play much more than half the game. That was most evident yesterday and when “Papa” Geno played 11 players. Maya Moore had a poor night, shooting the rock but, her rebounding and defense still gave the Friars fits. Once again, 5 players scored in double figures (Moore led the way with 16 points and 9 boards) and that is something “JIMBO” Calhoun would die for. Even Fernandes (11 minutes) and Kerns (3 minutes), whoever they are, got into this one sided affair. The Ladies had a huge night at the foul line (22 of 28) yet, their shooting from the field (42.1 %) and 17 turnovers no doubt will give Geno and his puppies something to work on in practice this week. Next game is home this Sunday, at 2pm, against Notre Dame. Hopefully, this one will be a little more entertaining than the game last night.

A long time ago I said an undefeated season was a no brainer and now, with this kind of balance and contributions from so many, an undefeated season should be soon to follow. That said, could you imagine this team if they had Doty, Donna-Delle and Buck. Scary, isn’t it.

I’m out of here!  Sic Rick
