Saturday afternoon, the UCONN Women’s Basketball Team defeated a game but, less than threatening Georgetown Hoyas squad and by the score of 80 to 61. The final score in this one was a lot closer than the actual game yet, with the Hoyas, shooting a respectful 10 for 20, from 3 point range, they stuck around until halftime and that surprised many. Whether the Huskies were looking ahead to their game next week against rival Rutgers or simply aware that they could turn on the jets and blast away the opponent whenever they wanted, Geno couldn’t have been pleased with the final margin of victory. Nonetheless, when the girls returned from the halftime intermission, they really heated things up. The result was a 25-3 run to start the half, a 70-33 lead and their 21st victory of the season. Five players scored in double figures and the Huskies out rebounded the Hoya women by a margin of 41 to 27.
The best part thing about this game was the continued offensive contribution the team received from freshman Tiffany Hayes. Although only 4 for 11 from the floor, three of those field goals were three pointers. She finished with 14 and that number was equal to what the Huskies also received from Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore. Tina Charles led the Huskies with 17 and Kalana Greene added 10 more.
Rutgers is next and it’s pay back time. Just like North Carolina, this squad will no doubt come into their game with the Huskies thinking they have a chance and why not. C. Vivian Stringer has got the best of us a couple of times yet, this time, they are clearly no match for the undefeated #1 team in the country.
I’m out of here! Sic Rick
